Thomas the Tank Engine, that very useful engine, stars in his own feature film. Lily, played by Mara Wilson, is on her way to visit her lonely grandfather (Peter Fonda), but she gets sidetracked at Shining Time Station, where she meets several whimsical characters including Thomas himself.

Now Lily must help Thomas find a way to defeat the mean-spirited Diesel 10, who doesn't play well with others, and assist Mr. conductor (Alex Baldwin) in his search for his magic gold dust. Somewhere along the way, Lily and all her new friends learn the valuable lesson that little engines can do big things.
